Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Mowrey Gun Works "Ethan Allen" rifle is a 20th-century muzzleloader produced from the mid-1960s until the early 1990s, inspired by the mid-19th-century side-hammer boxlock firearms originally manufactured by Allen & Thurber. Originally designed by retired tool-and-die maker Bill Mowrey in 1963 in Jacksboro, Texas, this steel-frame variant features a robust, cast-steel receiver finished in a traditional, non-glare browned steel rather than Mowrey's standard polished brass. Chambered across its production history in .36, .40, .45, .50, and .54 calibers, the rifle faithfully replicates the unique mechanical functionality of the original boxlock action—where the metal frame acts as the receiver, breech block, and stock wrist—but replaces the historical iron fore-end with a traditional two-piece wooden forearm, typically stocked in curly maple or walnut. Built entirely in-house produced components—including stocks famously carved from walnut salvaged from submerged timber in Lake Bridgeport—every barrel left the factory finished with painstaking, individually cut gain-twist rifling. While these firearms were sold fully assembled from the factory, Mowrey also offered the remaining components as mail-order DIY assembly kits for hobbyists to finish at home. Highly regarded by black-powder enthusiasts for its solid balance, rugged durability, and superb target-grade accuracy, this rifle stands as a highly authentic tribute to mid-19th-century firearms innovation.
