Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The F.B. Radom VIS Mod. 35, also known as the pistolet wz. 35 Vis or Pistole P.35(p) under German occupation is one of the most renowned sidearms of pre-WWII Poland and a symbol of national engineering excellence. Designed by Piotr Wilniewczyc and Jan Skrzypinski, the VIS 35 was adopted by the Polish Army in 1936 and produced at the Fabryka Broni factory in Radom. Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum and inspired by Browning’s designs, the pistol featured a single-action, short-recoil operation with a cam-locked barrel system similar to the Browning Hi-Power. Though often visually compared to the Colt M1911, it had its own identity, with features such as a grip safety, push-button magazine release, captive recoil spring, and a unique decocking lever added for cavalry use. Pre-war models, known for their high quality and marked with the Polish Eagle, are highly collectible today. After the German invasion in 1939, the Radom plant was taken over, and the pistol was mass-produced for the Wehrmacht under the designation Pistole P.35(p), with over 300,000 produced. Wartime models evolved through three production types, gradually eliminating features like the takedown lever and shoulder stock slot to streamline manufacturing.

Despite German control, Polish workers bravely smuggled parts to assemble pistols for resistance fighters, many of which were used during the Warsaw Uprising. Post-war, the communist government discontinued production in favor of Soviet designs, though the pistol’s reputation endured. In later decades, small commemorative runs were produced for collectors, and in 2017, renewed efforts aimed to bring the VIS 35 back to modern markets. Today, the VIS 35 stands as a historically and mechanically significant sidearm—admired for its design, resilience, and role in both national service and resistance.
